Students will investigate systems by dissecting them into their constituent components or processes and analyzing the relationships between those pieces and the whole. In this course a number of systems have been examined in regards to aging such as: biological system (why do our bodies grow old/intelligence and aging); cultural support systems (meaning); Social security; Retirement; Healthcare; Caregiving; Death.

Assume that the year is 2075, in the United States. Choose one of the systems that was discussed over the course of the semester. Answer, with detail, the following questions:

  • How has that system evolved over time? Be sure to discuss how it began, how it has changed and what you think its characteristics will be in 2075. Provide evidence for your arguments.
  • Explain how the system you chose is inter-related with at least two other systems that were examined in the class. You may also want to discuss how the system affects the individuals within that system.
  • Evaluate how system-level thinking (such as public policies or cultural traditions) affects the types of decisions that are made. Explain how the system may or may not be maintained by thinking about it from a “macro” or system level.

This essay is worth 15 points.
