1) Cigar and pipe smoking are equivalent to cigarette smoking, per the Mayo Clinic. Even if you don’t smoke cigarettes, you can still be exposed to nicotine and secondhand smoke from cigars and pipes. Cancer, lung and heart disease, and oral disease are just some of the consequences of cigar smoking (Hays Taylor, MayoClinic 2016). Cigarettes, pipes, and cigars all contain tobacco, which is harmful regardless of how it is smoked. Cigarettes and pipe tobacco are similar in taste, but cigars and pipes are puffed rather than inhaled.
2) I asked my grandfather this question he smoked cigarettes for 45 years. He stated that cigarettes were worst on the body because you are inhaling all the bad stuff in it. In our lecture notes it states that “Although cigars and pipes are not as dangerous as cigarettes, there is still an elevated risk of lung and other cancers (2.9 and 2.5 times, respectively; Brannon & Feist, 2010). “People who smoke are greatly increasing their risks of cardiovascular disease, lung cancer, and chronic pulmonary diseases, among other conditions. Every day, over 1,200 people in the United States die from a smoking-related disease, which makes nicotine the deadliest drug in the history of the world. Cardiovascular disease is the primary cause of smoking-related deaths. Cigarette smoking has a relative risk of 9.0 for lung cancer—in other words, a person who smokes is increasing his or her risk of developing cancer by 900% (Brannon & Feist, 2010).
Smoking is also related to cancers of the lip, oral cavity, pharynx, esophagus, pancreas, larynx, trachea, urinary bladder, and kidney (Smoking, n.d.).” My grandfather is proof that smoking can cause many illness. He had lung cancer a heart attack and is currently dealing with cardiovascular disease. Cigar smoking imposes the same health risks as cigarettes like cancer
3) Yes, it is correct that people think smoking a cigar or a pipe is less dangerous than smoking cigarettes. To add to what you already mentioned, smoking pipes or cigars causes all types of problems in a person’s mouth. Some problems that can occur are bad breath, stained teeth, gum disease, bad breath and missing teeth (WebMD, n.d.). One study revealed that people who smoke pipes and cigars had an average of four teeth missing. That is powerful that it causes a person to lose teeth. This causes financial issues because not you will have dentist bills on top of maybe getting cancer.
4) Similarly to the risk with alcohol and tobacco use, illegal drugs also share the same risk of dependency (Satre, D., n.d.). Depending on the nature of the drug, illegal drugs can effect an individual in physical and psychological ways(Satre, D., n.d.). All three of these groups of drugs are commonly used for pleasure, and for coping with stressor that an individual may experience in their lives. In younger populations, individuals drink in social settings, but older populations drink as a way to releive stress, and this is when habits can form into addictions (Satre, D., n.d.). Alcohol increases the risk of hypotension, risk of falling, and cognitive impairment(Satre, D., n.d.). Illegal drugs, such as benzodiazopines and opiates cause poor coordination, and can act as sedatives which impair vision and motor function(Satre, D., n.d.). Alcohol can cause cancer within the body if used in excessive manners, and tobacco, even when used casually can cause an individual to deveople cancer. Even over the counter drugs, when used against recommended doses, can cause damage to the liver and affect other parts of the body. When mixed with the ingestion of alcohol, these medications and illegal drugs can cause adverse effects, and even exaggerate the effects of the illegal drugs being used. All three categories, when used irresponsibly, can cause mental disorders such as depression(Satre, D., n.d.). The misuse of drugs can cause an individual to involuntarily lose their jobs also
5) “According to existing British and U.S. drug policy, alcohol and tobacco are legal, while cannabis and Ecstasy are both illegal. Tobacco causes 40 percent of all hospital illnesses, while alcohol is blamed for more than half of all visits to hospital emergency rooms. The substances also harm society in other ways, damaging families and occupying police services” (Conroy S. 2007).
The health effects of illegral drug use are less than those alcohol and tobacco, alcohol and tobacco are both legal and more frequently used. Alcohol and tobacco are known to generate more health problems because some people have easy access to alcohol and tobacco, and both can be consumed frequently because it is legal. Alcohol and tobacco can increase the chances of getting heart problems, cardiovascular dieseases and cancer. Cigar smoking imposes the same health risks as cigarettes like cancer
6) Smoking any tobacco product regardless of whether it came from a cigarette, pipe, or cigar can carry significant health risks. Cigarettes come in the form of tobacco lined in a thin paper. That tobacco flavored paper you smoke contains 7000 chemicals. Some of which, 250 are known to be harmful such as benzene. Cigar smoking imposes the same health risks as cigarettes like cancer
A toxic chemical found in vehicle emissions. Another chemical is Arsenic. A chemical found in weed and pest killer. One of the most disturbing ones is ethylene oxide. A dangerous chemical found in antifreeze. This goes for the same risk in pipe tobacco because it is still the same thing, just in the form of a pipe, as well as cigars which comes in the form of a tobacco leaf (Smoking, 2019). Among these three types of smoking habits, like many who believe they all differ from one another, they are rather similar.
The most common health risk is cancer. Results suggest that cigar and pop smokers are independently associated with increased risk for head, neck, throat, and tongue cancers. However, it is hard to focus on subjects who have smoked cigars, pipes, and cigarettes (Parkin, 2005). Cigar smoking imposes the same health risks as cigarettes like cancer
