In recent years, law enforcement and the media have paid a lot of attention to methamphetamine use. The probation office is trying to determine some options for dealing with and rehabilitating methamphetamine addicts. You have been asked to conduct research on some of the key problems surrounding the abuse of methamphetamine and to make suggestions on how to help those who struggle with this issue. Individual Portion

Each group member should write a paper of 650-750 words that addresses the following:

Select 3 of the following treatment modalities to analyze in your paper with regard to methamphetamine addiction:
- Detoxification
- Counseling
- Cognitive-behavioral therapy
- Group therapy
- Medications
- Matrix model
Answer the following questions:
- How is methamphetamine usually produced, transported, and sold? Explain.
- What immediate effects does methamphetamine have on the body?
- What are the long-term effects of methamphetamine use on one’s health? Explain.
- What are the demographics of methamphetamine usage? Why?
- What are obstacles and challenges in providing treatment to people who are addicted to methamphetamine?

The training seminar has set up an Internet Discussion Board for the participants to discuss issues related to licit and illicit drugs. You are asked to discuss cultural differences in the consumption and banning of drugs. As an example, the supervisor mentions that he Church of Latter Day Saints has prohibitions against caffeine and smoking tobacco. You are asked to consider the following questions:

What is a drug?

How long have human societies been using psychoactive drugs? (Give several examples) Drug Use And Abuse

Select either nicotine or alcohol as an example and briefly describe the drug’s effects on the brain, on behavior and on a person’s health.
Under what circumstances do you think a drug should be limited or banned? For example, do you think any drug that harms health should be banned or any drug that is addictive should be banned? Explain.
Do you think that it would be a good idea for the United States to completely ban alcohol or nicotine? Explain.

For this assignment, you will effectively be getting inside the head of the drug user and seeing the problem from their perspective. Write a research paper discussing what the use and abuse of one specific drug from a user’s immediate perspective. Basically I want you to explain why people choose to use/abuse the drug, how the actual “high” impacts them positively and negatively, what impact addiction has on everyday life, and how easy it is to hide the abuse and/or quit using the drug.

What I don’t want to see is medical statistics, a discussion of long term use problems, arrest figures, unemployment data, etc. Remember that the goal is to first understand and then explain drug use/abuse from the user’s perspective, not society’s perspective. You will need at least six peer reviewed sources (one of which can be the Buzzed text). You will write an academic paper that contains at least 6 pages of content (not including title page, abstract, or bibliography). The paper should look like this: Drug Use And Abuse
