Sample Prompt: Choose a definition of organizational culture, and explain whether you agree or disagree with the definition. Use examples from your own professional experience to support your response. Response: Whitehurst (2016) explained “organizational culture is defined by how people in an organization interact with each other” (para. 2). While I agree that this is one aspect of organizational culture, the definition does not capture the complex factors that contribute to organizational culture. When I started my first job after finishing my undergraduate degree in business, I worked for an organization whose main headquarters were in Dubai. When I traveled to Dubai for the first time, I realized that the culture of the Dubai office was largely influenced by the society’s culture in Dubai. I found that the organization lacked one cohesive culture and that, depending on regional locations, each office had its own culture. International organizations often face many challenges in maintaining a cohesive organizational culture (Watkins, 2013). I found this observation to be true in my experience. For example, the Dubai office seemed to endow their employees with more allowance for self-direction when compared with our domestic offices. Although people’s interactions with one another contributed to the organization’s culture, there were other factors like location, management style, and societal norms that impacted a business culture as well. Be specific, and be sure to support your ©2015 Walden University 3 reasoning with explicit references to leadership best practices and to appropriate theoretical frameworks about leadership. (2 – 3 paragraphs) – only add 1 example Your Response Part A: General Leadership • Leadership is the act of directing or leading a group of people or an organization. This is the most critical in any business, organization or a community. For one to be an effective leader, there are different emotional intelligence that should naturally come out of the person. LM001: Leadership Frameworks and Theories
For instance, in the case of Craig Kielburger’s actions and behaviors was kind enough to qualify him to be a good leader. Emotional intelligence is one of the most critical competencies that an effective leader should have (Kerr et al., 2006). Motivation, self-awareness, empathy, social skills, and self-regulation are the crucial traits that should be within an effective leader. For one to be successful in leadership there should be an impact felt by the surrounding. Craig Kielburger succeeded in his administration due to principles of leadership that he had that made people like him. For example, in his trip to South Asia, it was through empathy and self-awareness that he was able to rescue children who were under slavery, which finally came out victorious, and he had people who supported him to have a child rescue home. This shows how effective and influential he was to the society, which as a result rescued many children from slavery (Brown, 2010). As a good leader, this was something perfect to do; he was able to understand the emotional feeling of the other people of the society. ©2015 Walden University 4 • One can say that Craig Kielburger is an effective leader, since, for one he has the qualities that a good leader should have, somebody who listens to the people and not selfish. He aimed to influence everyone and make everyone useful in society; we see him and his group focusing on educating the rescued children. His main aim was to eradicate poverty from families since this was the reason why the children were working for a living. Part B: Personal Reflection • Leadership comes with many challenges. For one to be successful in the leadership field he or she first he should be able to understand the emotional intelligence of the group that he or she is leading. For instance, if one is leading an organization, it is much essential that the leader can solve problems among his members, in other words, he has the capability of solving problems and coming up with solutions to do away with the difficulties. This is one of the critical parts of any leadership field. This makes a leader perfect and develops one’s emotional intelligence by increasing the level of management skills and good relations among his group. On the other hand, uniting people is another challenge that is faced with many leaders, making every person feel equal. This means leadership should not be a position but a behavior. Leaders take the responsibility of bringing change and making decisions in their practices of empowering and discovering the potential in their group (Fiol, 1999). For instance, as a leader one can influence his group by acting as an example, this makes the group members feel close to the leader and hence able to share the challenges that they might be facing. ©2015 Walden University 5 In addition, as a leader one should make an impact, this is the most common among the great leaders of history, letting other people feel your impact. Coming up with a unique contribution to your leadership makes one more useful to his leadership roles. LM001: Leadership Frameworks and Theories
In addition, as a leader, one should have vision and money should come to the last option, perfect your functions and coordination towards the vision set aside and the team one is leading should be inspired by the vision. For example, a leader is not supposed to talk much. Instead, he or she is supposed to act work along with his group. This will motivate his group members and feel close to their leaders and can easily exchange the experiences. In addition, a leader can come up with motivational techniques to drive their members (Kark & Van Dijk, 2007). As a leader, your members should be the priority, since this will motivate them to work towards the goals that you have set for them. • Leadership enables leaders to focus on sustainable projects in order to affect a positive social change and to eliminate recurrent problems in society (Williams, 2014). This is because sustainable projects will enable the society to be independent and no longer depend on donations thus a positive social change. For instance, Craig Kielburger with the intention to help the enslaved children had to come up with a sustainable solution in order to eliminate the vicious cycle of rescue and back to slavery. His leadership skills enabled him to come up with the idea of constructing schools so that the rescued children could attend school rather than go back to slavery and the know-how of how to ensure that girls could also attend school rather than being at home taking care of the younger offspring and fetching water. ©2015 Walden University 6 Leaders can play the role of being good examples to the other employees so as to narrow the gap between espoused and lived organizational values (Harris & House, 1999). For instance, if leaders demonstrate integrity to the employees by being good examples of taking care of the organizational finances, the employees will follow that example and they will not embezzle the organization’s funds. Integrity is, therefore, a critical value that can be espoused by any company with the help of good leadership. Leaders can also play the role of guiding and correcting the employees so as to narrow any gap between espoused and lived organizational values. Through guidance, leaders can, therefore, narrow any gap between espoused and lived organizational values since employees will follow suit what they are being guided to do. Leaders can also play the role of setting a clear vision while motivating employees so as to narrow the gap between espoused and lived organizational values. Through motivation and setting of clear organizational vision, the gap between espoused and lived organizational values will narrow down since employees will feel motivated to narrow the gap between espoused and lived organizational values by their esteemed leaders. • The most important value espoused by the company I work for is the core value. This value is important since it ensures that employees work in line with the set values and with the objective of achieving the organization’s goals. LM001: Leadership Frameworks and Theories
The company lives and behaves in accordance with the core values. The leadership role in the process is setting a good example to ©2015 Walden University 7 the employees so that they can follow the good role models of the leaders. The practice of the core values can be influenced by creating awareness of the need and importance of working in accordance with the core values. Creating awareness in the organization of the need to work in accordance with the core values can influence the application of core values by the employees as they work. Good examples by the managers of the organization can also influence the practice of core values in the organization. This is because if the managers practice the use of core value, the other employees will be obliged to espouse the core values as they work. Since the managers are the leaders of the other employees, if they espouse core values as they work, other employees will do the same. This is because leaders lead by example.
