MENTAL HEALTH DISORDER: DEMENTIA

Introduction

Dementia is not a specific disease, it is a word used to explain a broad range of symptoms relating to the decline of memory and other thinking skills that can shorten a person’s competency to perform daily activities (Alzheimer’s Association, 2015

Causes and Symptoms

Picard, Pasquier, Martinaud, Hannequin, and Godefroy (2011) state the following. This condition is the culmination of multiple illnesses or disorders that have hastened psychological decline. Dementia often develops when brain nerve cells (neurons) die and connections between neurons are disrupted. These disorders have a variety of root causes and are frequently irreversible. Alzheimer’s, dementia with Lewy bodies, mixed dementia, Parkinson’s disease, and Huntington disease are the five different kinds of dementia. Despite the fact that each of these conditions has its own distinct symptoms, they are all related to dementia.

Other conditions that can cause dementia include traumatic head injuries and Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome. Infrequently, dementia is initiated by a treatable disorder such as depression or an adverse reaction to drugs and may be partly or completely reversed if the disorder is identified and treated timely (Picard et al., 2011). Dementia symptoms manifest themselves progressively then with time the condition worsens which finally hamper the mental functional ability of an individual. (Cerejeira, Lagarto, & Mukaetova-Ladinska, 2012). The initial symptom of dementia is loss of memory. The memory loss associated with dementia is not comparable to forgetfulness to which all individuals are sometimes subjected. For instance, not being in a position to remember the function of a care key is possibly an indication of dementia while forgetting where you placed the care key is normal.(Cerejeira et al., 2012). Effects of dementia on work, family and social function

A person suffering from dementia may have difficulty in performing psychological tasks such as driving, picking up new concepts, keeping checkbooks or remembering the day of the week (Cerejeira et al., 2012).  The individual may also have poor decision making ability. As dementia advances, the individual might fail to identify their environment, make incomplete sentences, fail to identify people they should know or even develop difficulties with their hygiene.( Cerejeira et al..2012).

Sometimes, an individual with dementia might suffer from hallucinations and delusions. Although symptoms of dementia can differ significantly, at least two central mental utilities (memory, visual perception, reasoning and judgment, ability to focus and pay attention, and communication and language) must be seriously diminished to be diagnosed as dementia (Cerejeira et al., 2012). Social ramification is almost a chain reaction to aspects in life. Some of the social ramifications would call for the need of an individual to get assistance in doing daily activities, leading to stress within the family because financial challenges which arise. Other aspects may sometimes cause individuals to forget the memories they have and by replacing those with false ones. This may lead to confusion of their surroundings and cause them to perhaps wonder or run off which can lead to higher homeless rates. Mental Health Disorder Condition Paper

Legal and Ethical Concerns

Concerns about the law and morality surround dementia. Dementia patients may be sedated in a mental hospital either after being released for reasons of insanity or to assess their capacity to stand trial. Theoretically, a mentally ill person can be sent to a facility for psychiatric treatment or taken to a prison hospital rather than being imprisoned in a regular prison. In practice, a mentally ill person can be held morally and legally accountable for an offense. However, they can be legally certified as mentally ill and hospitalized, even against their will.
