Multicultural Experience and Paper

This multicultural experience is designed to help students reflect upon their own social and cultural identification, their own potential biases, beliefs, and values, and to engage students in the practice of assessing and developing their counseling cultural competence. Multicultural Experience and Paper

This assignment requires the completion of two components:

1. Attending a community event.

2. Completing a written paper.

Part 1: Attending a Community Event

Each student will attend a community event in a multicultural setting that is significantly different from your own background and that you know will challenge your level of comfort. The first step to this process is to reflect upon your own identification in terms of race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, disability, social class, gender identification, religious beliefs, etc. How would you describe yourself? Once you have reflected upon this, you can begin to think about events that are related to aspects of yourself that are different, and search for an event that will enlighten you in some way to that group’s culture, social structure, beliefs, or values.

Part II: The Written Paper

You are to write a paper based upon your experience in three parts.

1. Very briefly describe the experience of the activity. What activity did you attend? You

may want to comment on how it was structured and organized, how well attended it

was, etc. In other words, provide a context for your experience. (This section should be

one page in length).

2. Discuss how you were challenged by the activity and what you learned about yourself.

Include a discussion of the following:

A. What experiences, beliefs, or values from your social and cultural background

contributed to your reactions?

B. How consistent or inconsistent was your experience in regards to your

previously held personal beliefs and attitudes toward the group? Did the

experience confirm or disconfirm any existing beliefs or attitudes?

C. What did you learn about the group? (This section should be 3 pages in

length).
