Nursing leaders often face the following ethical dilemmas: B. Those related to choosing between competing needs and limited resources. Resources are finite and competition for these resources occurs every day in every organization.
For example, using 12-hour shifts was a strategy for retaining nurses. But there is evidence that the longer nurses work a shift, the more they make mistakes. How do effective leaders balance the needs of their organization with the demands of ensuring high quality, effective and safe patient care? In healthcare, staff, resources, and patient needs are often in conflict. Mandatory overtime, enforcing staffing ratios, the use of unlicensed support staff, and employer cuts in educational benefits are examples of practices that can actually result in conflicting needs.

- Identify and describe at least two competing needs impacting your selected healthcare issue/stressor.
- Describe a relevant policy or practice in your organization that may influence your selected healthcare issue/stressor.
- Critique the policy for ethical considerations, and explain the policy’s strengths and challenges in promoting ethics.
- Recommend one or more policy or practice changes designed to balance the competing needs of resources, workers, and patients, while addressing any ethical shortcomings of the existing policies. Be specific and provide examples.
