Discussion: Organizational Policies and Practices to Support Healthcare Issues (Week 3)

Assignment: Developing Organizational Policies and Practices

The process by which policies are developed requires the involvement of multiple stakeholders, from identifying problems, raising awareness, searching for possible solutions, and finally adopting policies (Butkus, Rapp, Cooney & Engel, 2020). Different stakeholders have different and often competing needs, so there is no doubt that some kind of negotiation needs to take place. Second, for a policy to be successful, the needs and goals of each interest group must also be adequately met or addressed by the policy (Butkus et al., 2020).

An example is a hospital that is focused on generating more revenue, but staff may be concerned with safe working conditions and patients and families concerned with quality of care. The above illustrate the diverse and competing needs that leadership must navigate and consider in order to formulate successful policies.

The national stressor I chose was the aging workforce. In this regard, the problem can affect hospital profit margins as retired workers cannot be replaced by new workers or are less productive. An aging workforce may also require more housing, additional resources and support, slower adaptation to technology, and more chronic medical conditions (World Health Organization, 2020). This can increase hospital operating costs and thwart cost reduction goals. This aging population also impacts hospitals through additional nursing hours for caregiving, increasing the risk of error and potential injury and litigation (WHO, 2020). All relevant stakeholders must be involved for the policy development process to be successful. Strategies such as negotiation, consultation and dialogue can be used in this process (Pache & Santos, 2013). The reason for involving multiple stakeholders is that we want to be as inclusive as possible so that as many voices as possible are heard and a “win-win” solution is achieved. Failure to do so will result in policy resistance. Starting with the same goals and gaining stakeholder buy-in improves final policy adoption and compliance (Pache & Santos, 2013).
