Your quest to purchase a new car begins with an identification of the factors important to you. As you conduct a search of cars that rate high on those factors, you collect evidence and try to understand the extent of that evidence. A report that suggests a certain make and model of automobile has high mileage is encouraging. But who produced that report? How valid is it? How was the data collected, and what was the sample size? NURS 5052 Essentials of Evidence Based Practice
In this Assignment, you will delve deeper into clinical inquiry by closely examining your PICO(T) question. You also begin to analyze the evidence you have collected.
To Prepare:
- Review the Resources and identify a clinical issue of interest that can form the basis of a clinical inquiry. Presentation on the Essentials of Evidence Based Practice
- Develop a PICO(T) question to address the clinical issue of interest you identified in Module 2 for the Assignment. This PICOT question will remain the same for the entire course.
- Use the key words from the PICO(T) question you developed and search at least four different databases in the Walden Library. Identify at least four relevant systematic reviews or other filtered high-level evidence, which includes meta-analyses, critically-appraised topics (evidence syntheses), critically-appraised individual articles (article synopses). The evidence will not necessarily address all the elements of your PICO(T) question, so select the most important concepts to search and find the best evidence available.
- Reflect on the process of creating a PICO(T) question and searching for peer-reviewed research.

The purpose of this paper is to analyze four articles. The following articles are based on the topic of appropriate nurse to patient ratios. This paper will explain further as to why the articles were chosen. This paper will also discuss how these articles relate to my topic of choice. Furthermore, it will elaborate on ethics, the aims of the research and the methodology along with its strengths.
Article #1
I chose this article because I reviewed and analyzed other articles regarding the effects of nurse staffing and patient safety by the main author, Linda Aiken. This article talks about a study that determines if nurse staffing ratios affected medication errors. This specific study includes anonymous responses from nurses as well as information from patient charts that has been kept confidential, hence this holds to the ethical principles of research of privacy and confidentiality.
This research aimed to identify the relation between nurse to patient ratio and patient mortality and complications. This specific study was a mixed methods study. Objective data was utilized from 232,342 general, orthopedic, and vascular surgery patients that were discharged from the hospital anywhere from April 1998 to November 1999. Also, administrative data was utilized from 168 adult general hospitals (non-federal) in Pennsylvania as well as surveys that consisted of subjective data that nurses reported. NURS 5052 Essentials of Evidence Based Practice
The strengths of this research are that the objective data comes from 168 hospitals, hence this makes the data shared in this research more reliable because of the size of the sample. The methodology applied in this study was valid since it measured the data it was intended to measure in the manner from each source of subjective data that nurses reported.
Article #2
I chose this article after researching strategies that will reduce medication errors in a hospital setting. It discusses a study that examines the correlation between nurse staffing and medication errors. Objective data was used from administrative databases from one hospital and 31,080 patient observations, this research held to the ethical principles of research such as confidentiality, privacy, and informed consent.
This research aimed to examine the relationship between nurse staffing and the occurrence of medication errors. This was a quantitative study that used a retrospective design that contained 801 weekly staffing intervals from one hospital and 31,080 patient observations. The strengths of this study are that the objective data is from a large number of charts. The methodology applied in this study has validity in that it measured the data it was intended to measure in the same way from each source.
Article #3
This article was chosen because it contained great information from a study that was done in 2016 regarding medication administration errors. After reading the article I realized this study included statistical analysis, and manual analysis of free text descriptions of medication errors that were reported in 2016. This study was approved by the Research Ethics Office of King’s College London. This study had different purposes: 1) Identify terms that can be utilized to identify inadequate staffing that leads to medication errors. 2) To compare the degree of harm of the incidents that occured 3) To analyze the correlation between the most commonly reported inadequate staffing terms and the incidence of omission errors and “no harm” terms.
This study was quantitative and used retrospective descriptive analysis, and analysis of medication incident reports. The strengths of this study are that the data is objective, and was acquired from 73,290 incident reports, that had thorough information regarding incident reports that have occured within a reliable time frame. The methodology applied in this study has validity, as mentioned the studies that were reviewed are within a reliable time frame and the data that was measured similarly in each source.
Article #4
This article was chosen because the study reviewed results from other studies related to medication administration errors in hospitals. This study involved data from 54 studies on the causes of medication administration errors. It held to the ethical principles of research of confidentiality, privacy and informed consent due to the fact that it mined information available from previous studies. The aim of this study was to review and appraise evidence related to the causes of medication administration errors. This study was quantitative, using keywords to search for other studies related to medication administration errors. Researchers used the information found in 54 other studies based on the relevance of the research question and whether the results reflected the possible causes of medication administration This study was quantitative, using keywords to search for other studies related to medication administration errors. Researchers used the information found in 54 other studies based on the relevance of the research question and whether the results reflected the possible causes of medication administration errors. The strengths of this study are that the data is objective, taken from 54 other studies from many areas, making the sample size much larger than a singular hospital study and more reliable. The methodology applied in the study has validity in that it measured the data it was intended to measure in the same way from each source. NURS 5052 Essentials of Evidence Based Practice
