Translating and Disseminating Research in Nursing

Translating and disseminating research in nursing make valuable contributions to the development of science and improving the health care system. The DNP project is a culmination of nursing studies and the opportunity for such contributions. Translation science is a comparatively new and continuously growing area. The process of the implementation helps to evaluate which strategies work for which patients, and in which circumstances. For the effectiveness of the translation, an appropriate strategy must be chosen. As Trautman et al. (2018, para. 4) state, “experts are implementing evidence into practice when systems demonstrate readiness, conducting assessments driven by data … and evaluating implementation using reliable metrics.” Titler (2018) argues that implementation strategy should consist of three stages:

  1. Providing description and guidance;
  2. Indicating the factors that influence the implementation;
  3. Evaluating the outcomes.

The effectiveness of the translation is determined by correct actions in multiple aspects. First, extended guides for practitioners must be provided, possibly supported by visual representations. Second, ongoing auditions of the performance, including face-to-face interaction with clinicians, must be conducted. Third, the final revision of the proposed measures should be completed. Finally, in case of success, the program has to be disseminated to a higher level. Dissemination is an essential aspect of research translation that helps to improve health care services. The research results can be reported “on professional committee meetings … through various media, such as print flyers, news updates, or via a closed-circuit TV system” (Dudley-Brown, 2019, p. 256).

It is evident that translation requires inter-professional collaboration when the researcher should contact the clinicians of various specializations. For example, the DPI quality project that focuses on primary care measures to avoid falls from older patients requires joint efforts of physicians, neurologists, psychologists, and other specialists in monitoring and assessing the process of implementation. Further process of dissemination implies communication with social media agents.

In summary, the process of translation and dissemination of the research contributes to the improvement of the health care system. The DPI project can be such a contribution if implemented into practice. The process of implementation includes particular challenges, such as the ability of inter-professional collaboration. Nevertheless, the outcome of the practice may be highly valuable for the health care system.
