Scenario 4: After receiving a call from the patient’s roommate, emergency medical services (EMS) arrive to find a 27-year-old patient with a history of substance abuse unconscious. According to the roommate, he is unsure of how long the patient had been lying there. Patient is now responsive after receiving naloxone on the scene. He says his left hip and forearm are both burning with pain. A significant amount of necrotic tissue was found over the greater trochanter and forearm during examination in the emergency department. On the EKG, the PR interval was prolonged and the T waves peaked. 6.9 mEq/L of potassium in the blood.

In this Assignment, you examine a case study and analyze the symptoms presented. You identify cell, gene, and/or process elements that may be factors in the diagnosis, and you explain the implications to patient health.

THE ASSIGNMENT (1- TO 2-PAGE CASE STUDY ANALYSIS)

Develop a 1- to 2-page case study analysis in which you:

  • Explain why you think the patient presented the symptoms described.
  • Identify the genes that may be associated with the development of the disease.
  • Explain the process of immunosuppression and the effect it has on body systems.

This article is an update to the Beers Criteria, which includes lists of potentially inappropriate medications to be avoided in older adults as well as newly added criteria that lists select drugs that should be avoided or have their dose adjusted based on the individual’s kidney function and select drug-drug interactions documented to be associated with harms in older adults.
