Welcome to week 2-Altered Physiology.

In this week’s lesson, we are continuing from week 1 and completing Module 1. Your assignment for this week is to complete the module’s Case Study Analysis:

Scenario: A 65-year-old obese African American male patient visits his HCP complaining of crampy left lower quadrant discomfort, constipation, and fevers of 101 degrees Fahrenheit. He’s had several instances like this in the last 15 years, and they’ve all responded to bowel rest and medicines. Despite his history of chronic inflammatory bowel illness (diverticulitis), sedentary lifestyle, and fiber-deficient diet, he has refused to get the necessary colonoscopy. His paternal grandpa also died of colon cancer in the 1950s. Following the resolution of his acute diverticulitis, he had colonoscopy. Explain why you think the patient presented the symptoms described.

Identify the genes that may be associated with the development of the disease.

Explain the process of immunosuppression and the effect it has on body systems.

Week 2: Altered Physiology

With a place squarely in the spotlight for patients diagnosed with all manner of disease, APRNs must demonstrate not only support and compassion, but expertise to guide patients’ understanding of diagnoses and treatment plans.

This expertise goes beyond an understanding of disease and sciences, such as cellular pathophysiology. APRNs must become experts in their patients, understanding their medical backgrounds, pertinent characteristics, and other variables that can be factors in their diagnoses and treatments.
