Assignment: Analysis of a Pertinent Healthcare Issue
The four goals provide a broad category of goals that should be pursued to maintain and improve healthcare. Each goal has a number of issues that, if well addressed, can have a positive impact on the outcome. For example, healthcare leaders face the challenge of shifting the focus from disease treatment, often provided in acute care, to health promotion and disease prevention in primary care. Efforts in this area can have a significant positive impact by reducing the need for primary health care and easing the burden on health systems.
Industry change only emphasizes what has always been true. The bottom line is that healthcare always faces major challenges, and the goal of improving healthcare always involves multiple stakeholders. Given the circumstances, this is not surprising. Indeed, when a growing population needs care, factors such as the rising demand for providing that care and the costs associated with healthcare will play a role. In general, it should come as no surprise that healthcare is an industry that faces multiple challenges that change over time.
In this module description we have identified several health care issues/stressors and he has selected one for further review. This task delves into selected health issues/stressors. You will also review research that addresses the problem/stressor and write a white paper that addresses the selected problem/stressor to organizational leaders. Current Healthcare Issues
According to Gerardi, Farmer, & Hoffman (2018), “the American Organization of Nurse Executives has been made to increase the proportion of nurses with a bachelor of science in nursing or higher degree to 80% by 2020.” Given this, hospitals across the nation are accepting the responsibilities of identifying and developing efficient strategies towards training and providing help for nurses to achieve a higher education in their workforce.
Over the last few years, the hospital facility that I work in has practiced hiring higher educated nursing staff to attend patients as opposed to those who only obtain a high school diploma. There are flyers on many of the bulletins for those who have already been employed to be encouraged to achieve a higher degree program. For those who apply for the bachelor’s program, the facility reimburses nurses for some of their tuition costs so that they wouldn’t be discouraged to attend or drop out because of finances. There are also programs that nurses can attend if they have already graduated with an Associates degree, which is called the fast-track diploma. This program is offered for a 15-month term and has options for both RN and BSN programs. Given that patient population is becoming more diverse, it is imperative that nurses are knowledgeable on the topics concerning their patients outside of health.
For instance, to gain a standard knowledge of cultural backgrounds, religious affiliations as it relates to health options, and ethnicity differences (Marzuki, Hassan, Wichaikhum, & Nantsupawat, 2012). Nurses must possess more skills, knowledge, and competencies to deal with the challenges that arise in their field because of how the way our world changes so quickly. Having incompetent nurses in the field can become detrimental to the healthcare facility as well as the patients who are being looked after (Marshall, E., & Broome, 2017). This is due to the poor quality of services given to patients, miscommunication, misguidance, and misunderstandings because the nurses aren’t caught up with the nursing world as it is today that a higher degree program can help them achieve. Having a demoted workforce and nurses not understanding the patient population as what it is today can prevent patients from receiving quality care, safety measures may be at stake, and untrained staff members means more likely mistakes could occur with medications, equipment operations, and so forth. RE: Discussion – Week 1
Lenick,
You are spot on about the nursing shortages in the US. The consequences of having inadequate health care affect those providing care as well as those receiving it. Increased workload directly increases stress, errors and mortality rates for patients (Peate, 2020). Additional reasons for the nursing shortage include nurse burnout; career versus family with nurses leaving the workforce, unrealistic staffing ratios; continuously changing technology; and an increase in violence (HOUSH, WU NURS 6053 Wk 3 Pertinent Healthcare Issue 2019).
The facility I formerly worked for, offered scholarship programs to nurses wishing to further their education. In exchange, the nurse signs a contract agreeing to stay with the facility for a minimum of five years. During that time, a percentage of the staff members check will be garnished to repay the scholarship. Many nurses are not aware of the fine print when they sign the contract. WU NURS 6053 Wk 3 Pertinent Healthcare Issue
Not only are they locked into a job they may or may not be right for but also are subject to the same requirements as any other loan. The hospital advertises the opportunity as a scholarship but in fact it is a loan. Rather than help our nursing shortage, it has increased frustrations due to unanticipatedly aggressive repayment plans through garnishment. In short, the nurses who obtained the scholarship ended up leaving after their contracts were completed and the shortage continues.WU NURS 6053 Wk 3 Pertinent Healthcare Issue & The Quadruple Aim Discussion
