Two years ago, I was a marketing manager for a pharmaceutical company. The objective was to market an angiotensin receptor/neprilysin inhibitor (ARNI). This is a new combination drug for the treatment of heart failure. I was in charge of a team of eight members at the start of the project. The objective of the project was to understand the pharmacodynamics and the target market in which the drug could be used and also come up with a marketing plan for the drug within two months. I was the marketing team leader, and I was responsible for communicating the objectives to the team. The team was to collaborate with other departments such as research, sales, and finance.
The leadership approach I chose to use to achieve the objectives was the democratic leadership style. I wanted every member of the team to feel involved. This was important because every team member has different professional expertise, experience, and creativity. I chose the democratic leadership style because I wanted team members to actively participate and provide their input and suggestions whenever necessary (Arnold & Fleshman, 2020 This leadership style created an open door for communication and enabled the exchange of ideas. This motivated team members to develop a sense of ownership toward the project. The team’s efficiency in meeting the objectives improved due to decreased absenteeism.
Decision-making is key to successful leadership. I decided to use the behavioral and analytical styles of decision-making. I analyzed all data related to the project to make proper decisions. This method helps to ensure there are no loopholes when choosing the best course of action. To foster trust in the team, I used the behavioral method. This I achieved by consulting the team before settling on any final decision.
Communication is vital for the completion of any project. I had to make sure that communication between the marketing team members was evident. Communication between my team and other department had to be flawless. I had to be transparent and assertive (Bocar, 2017 I had to be honest and direct when giving my opinions and suggestions. I also had to respect my teammates’ opinions. The channels for communication were open to ensure that anyone could get clarification whenever they needed it. Teammates were free to approach me with any concerns they had.
The communication and leadership styles blended well, leading to a commitment from the team members to complete the project. Effective collaboration was needed to foster mutual trust and knowledge sharing between the different team members and specialties. As a leader, I was charged with this responsibility. I came up with a team-based reward system to encourage better performance from the team members. This reward system involved monetary and non-monetary benefits linked to the achievement of team goals. Team members had more incentive to collaborate and delegate duties based on expertise. This led to high interdependence between my team and the different departments and better collaboration.
The reward-based system, however, had some challenges. Some team members felt that members whose performance was below average would bring down the team’s overall performance. This led to some resistance. This was addressed using workshops and mentoring. The team members were encouraged to help each other out and believe that everyone has something to contribute.
As a healthcare provider, I face ethical challenges in my practice that have the potential to impact the lives of patients. I usually refer to the code of ethics to guide me in handling these challenges effectively. The code of ethics has four main principles, namely patient autonomy, beneficence, justice, and nonmaleficence. These principles can give rise to an ethical dilemma if they conflict with each other (Varkey, 2021
Healthcare should be accessible, affordable, and efficient to ensure the improvement and sustenance of the overall quality of life. Justice requires that all medical resources be distributed fairly among all individuals. In nonmaleficence, a healthcare provider should aim to minimize harm to the patient. The drug is a combination of sacubitril and valsartan, two antihypertensive drugs. The drug showed promising results in reducing cardiovascular death and hospitalizations among patients (Metra & Teerlink, 2017).
Marketing of this drug showed that affordability would be a barrier to its adoption. Patients on an ARNI as part of the treatment regimen for heart failure could face up to $1400 more in annual costs than patients prescribed ARBs. This drug was well covered by Part D plans of Medicare. It, however, has high out-of-pocket costs. This is concerning as the high costs of the medication contribute to poor adherence to medication and, therefore, poor patient outcomes. Individuals from low-income families with no insurance cover cannot afford this drug. This gave rise to an ethical dilemma because the principle of justice and nonmaleficence were conflicted.
To resolve the issue of affordability, I used the LEADS framework, i.e., lead self, engage others, achieve results, develop coalitions and achieve results (Levitt, 2018). I set up a committee involving the finance and sales teams. The goal was to find a way of ensuring patients have good outcomes. I encouraged the committee to have regular conversations about out-of-pocket costs to facilitate the early identification of other cost-effective alternatives. This allows for early intervention if cost-associated discontinuation of therapy is necessary. This resulted in better outcomes for patients.
