DQ 1
Review the evidence-based practice project ideas you described in Topic 5 DQ 1. Based on your initial ideas, what types of scholarly nursing research (such as quantitative or qualitative research, peer-reviewed resources, etc.) would be required to further investigate the issue? Identify the criteria you would use to evaluate the appropriateness of the research. Why is it important to select research that meets these criteria? DQ 1 topic 5
The critical care nursing field is one of the most complex and demanding fields. Providing care and attending to the needs of severely ill or injured patients requires adequacy of skills, efficiency, and competency (Rajamani et al., 2021). Tasks in the specific nursing practice include multidimensional patient assessment, implementation of intensive care interventions and therapies, and observing the patients. Working as a critical care registered nurse (CCRN), the issue of nurse shortage is one of the intricate concerns due to the disparity between the ratio of the nurses to patients. The specialty requires the provision of a wide range of care services to the patients, and to ensure improved patient-centered care, nurses need to ensure efficiency. Nurse shortage leads to burnout syndrome, resulting in inefficiency in the care delivery processes, affecting health wellness among the nurses (Swamy et al., 2020). Nurse burnout syndrome results from prolonged workplace stress and is described by excessive exhaustion, frustration, cynicism, and mental breakdown, causing work distraction. Burnout syndrome affects individuals lacking a history of psychological disorder and was first described in the 1970s. Harsh working conditions in critical care nursing units are revealed through muscle tension, insomnia, and headaches. Additionally, concerning care quality, BOS causes reduced patient satisfaction, increased employee turnover, decreased care quality, and high mortality rates. Dealing with a high patient count in one’s specialty area, nurse shortage is a crucial threat to work efficiency. The paramount theory to apply in the described situation and ensure sufficient and efficient care for patients in the stressful environment is the Watson theory (Beckstead & Beckstead, 2006). The Watson theory explains the importance of caring for humans and their transpersonal interactions and their healing potential for individuals providing and receiving care.
The application of the Watson theory in the provision of care in the Intensive Care Unit can be pretty practical. The theory is logical and relevant in educating the patients of the applicable and reliable healing measures. Also, the nurses would focus on their personal development and health safety to ensure preserved efficiency to care for the patients in need of their services. Nurses need spare time to take care of their health needs and ensure better working conditions for all. The Watson theory creates awareness for the need to address the issue of nurse shortage in the healthcare fraternity. )))))))))))))))
DQ 2
Imagine the following scenario: You are taking the evidence-based practice course and one of your classmates shares an EBP project draft with you. You notice that some of the research has not been cited correctly or even at all. When you approach your classmate, the response is that “no one will notice and it is not a big deal anyway.” What are your next steps in speaking with your classmate? Consider how this could reflect on the credibility and integrity of the individuals involved, the University, and the profession.
